Warsaw, IN –  Warsaw Community Schools (WCS) is excited to highlight a unique project-based learning unit inspired by Daniel James Brown's riveting book, "The Boys in the Boat." Although Edgewood has had several cross-curricular collaborative project-based learning units, none of them have been of this scale.

In "The Boys in the Boat," Edgewood students read about the incredible true story of the University of Washington’s rowing team as they rowed their way to gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, overcoming countless obstacles with unbeatable teamwork and perseverance.

Edgewood will be diving into the book’s themes through all sorts of fun and educational activities that touch on everything from history and literature to science and gym. They’ll be living the spirit of teamwork and excellence that drove the team in the book to success.

The grand finale will be a boat race on May 17, 2024, right here at Edgewood Middle School. It’s going to be a full day of fun, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the races happening from 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Principal JoElla Hauselman shared, "We believe that 'The Boys in the Boat' provides a powerful metaphor for the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and resilience, qualities that are essential for success both in and out of the classroom. Through this project-based learning unit and culminating boat race, we aim to inspire our students to reach for greatness and discover the strength that comes from working together."

Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert, added, “This spring, Lakeview and Edgewood have diligently and intentionally developed project-based learning activities for the entire school.  These lessons showcase the schoolwide read of the best selling book “The Boys in the Boat.”  Staff have developed these engaging lessons to help inspire students in the themes of the Olympics, History, Culture, Teamwork and the local connection to the origin of the book.”

Members of the media and the community are invited to join us for this unforgettable event. For more information or to schedule interviews, please contact Principal JoElla Hauselman at jhauselman@warsawschools.org or 574-371-5096.
