Each spring WCHS gathers interested students on academic teams to compete in Indiana’s Academic Superbowl competitions. Subjects of competition include Mathematics, English, Science, Social Studies, and Fine Arts. WCHS faces stiff competition from area schools at each “meet” but our teams are already busy studying and practicing for this year’s contest.
This year’s Math team is coached by Mrs. Barb McCollom and Mr. Chuck Wiebe. Students join Academic Super Bowl teams for a variety of reasons but for most it’s because they find enjoyment in learning more about a particular subject. Junior Abygail Hermann says, “I joined (Math) ASB because I wanted to expand my knowledge about math and numbers — something I’ve always found so interesting. Math ASB has given me several important skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, and strategic thinking, that will help me in achieving my dream to be an engineer!”
“It’s great to see so many students wanting to stretch themselves and master subject matter that isn’t traditionally taught in high school Mathematics courses”, says Mr. Wiebe. For example, this year’s team must learn about Spherical Trigonometry and how it relates to global navigation as well as Logic and Set Theory among other topics.
Competitions start in early March. Good luck Tigers and happy studying!
