WARSAW, IN - Warsaw Community Schools (WCS) is looking forward to welcoming back award-winning photographer and multimedia journalist Thomas Franklin on Friday, September 18, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

 

Franklin previously visited Warsaw Community Schools for the 20th anniversary of 9/11 in 2021 and also in 2017. By popular demand, WCS is bringing him back to once again share his firsthand experience with students and provide a unique perspective on an important moment in American history.

 

Franklin is best known for his iconic photograph of three firefighters raising an American flag at Ground Zero following the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The photograph became one of the most recognized images from that day and was featured on the United States Postal Service’s Heroes of 2001 fundraising stamp.

 

On September 18, all Warsaw Community Schools fifth-grade students will hear from Franklin. He will share a historical account of September 11, his experience covering the aftermath at Ground Zero and the story behind the photograph.

 

The presentation will give students an opportunity to learn about history through the perspective of someone who witnessed and documented the event firsthand.

 

Following the presentation, Franklin will spend additional time with some of the WCHS photography, journalism broadcast and media students. Students will participate in a photography and videography workshop.
